Do you wanna (teach others to) build a podcast?

April 16, 2021 WiLS staff

In 2019, WiLS funded Lodi Public Library’s amazing idea of partnering with the Lodi High School to teach podcasting to high school students. They did that AND they have produced a ton of great material to share with other WiLS members looking to get into the podcasting – and teaching podcasting – business!

Equipment/Software Purchased is a handy spreadsheet of what microphone, storage, cables, and headphone they purchased for the project.

Class Planning contains the syllabi for each of the course’s six sessions.

List of Science Podcasts is a list of science podcasts for suggested listening and why you (or students) should listen to them.

How to Use Soundtrap is a checklist for how to use this digital audio workstation.

Following the project, Lodi Public Library shares these pieces of advice:

The equipment and software we purchased are fantastic. They do require a lot of creativity, so you’ll need staff interested in being creative or you’ll need to hire people for that purpose. It takes many different skills and thus a lot of time. In our case, we needed to learn the equipment and teach it, find good software and learn it and teach it, plan lessons and teach in class, establish recording times, help students produce the podcast, and find the time in our schedules and the school’s and student schedules to tie everything together. Our plan was ambitious, but it was also satisfying when we pulled it off.

Great work, Lodi Public Library and Lodi High School!
