Introducing WiLS’ Social Justice Spotlight and the Unity Project

June 16, 2021 WiLS staff
two spotlights shine on The Unity Project

WiLS’ 2021 Strategic Initiatives include a commitment to operationalize our organization’s values by “identifying or creating tangible opportunities to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion.” One way we are doing this is through the Social Justice Spotlight series, which seeks to use WiLS’ platform to amplify community-based organizations, initiatives, and projects in and around Wisconsin that do bold, on-the-ground work in racial equity and social justice. Some spotlighted initiatives are nominated by WiLS members (including today’s spotlight!) while others may be designated by the WiLS team.

This quarter, we are shining the Social Justice Spotlight on the important work of the Unity Project in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. Founded in 2017, the Unity Project is a group of community members working together to make sure every person in their community feels a sense of belonging.

The Unity Project’s activities include hosting and participating in a variety of community-wide events, including the upcoming Fall Fort Fiesta in September and Fort Atkinson’s Main Street Pride Event in October. The Unity Project is active on social media, especially Facebook, where they share their activities and links to articles and videos. In pre-pandemic times, The Unity Project hosted their monthly meetings at the Dwight Foster Public Library in Fort Atkinson. The Unity Project’s School Partnership Committee recently received a grant to purchase books and other materials that amplify diverse voices in classrooms and school libraries. Read more about that project in the Daily Jefferson County Union.

To get involved and support the work of the Unity Project, follow them on Facebook to learn about and share their upcoming events.
