Celebrating Summer, WiLS Style

September 18, 2025 WiLS staff

Sweater weather approaches. Soon we’ll be picking apples, flannel-laden with pumpkin spice latte in-hand, thrifting for Halloween costumes. But it’s also a goodbye to summer – a glorious season filled with its own traditions and nostalgia. In summer’s waning days, our staff wanted to share the places and people that make it a special time of year to each of us, outside of the office.

I attended two different gaming events this Summer. Gaming Hoopla was held in Milwaukee in May. It’s a charity event that raised over $40k for Aurora Cancer Care.

On the other side of summer (August), I volunteered at Play Make Learn 2025, which is an amazing conference all about playful learning, making and games for social impact and education!

Having time with my family in the summer is my idea of summer bliss! With two 20-something daughters living full lives, this time is even more precious. Our go-to family activities typically involve silent water sports, but we also love to enjoy live music together. Seeing Lucy Dacus (if you know boygenius, you know Lucy) at the Riverside in Milwaukee was incredible! And I got to run into the amazing Tracy Vreeke (Nicolet Federated Library System) and her daughter, too! Now my girls are encouraging me to grow out my hair – Tracy style. 😉

From September through May, I wait for the pool to open. This is not an exaggeration. I bought a perfume because it smelled like the pool experience, and I only wear it in winter when I’m feeling low. When Gemini season hits, I start to get excited for all things pool: swimming and bobbing in the water, the 80s music, the scent of sunscreen, the sound of happy kids playing, freeze pops from the concession stand (sold to me by my daughter!). Our pool is in the middle of the woods; we are often graced with frogs at the water’s edge and, competing gleefully with the 80s music, raucous birdsong. It is a ‘thin place’ for me and my family, a little slice of fleeting heaven for three glorious months each year.

One of the things I cherish about the summer season is the opportunity (around high temps, humidity, and wildfire smoke…) to spend more time outside with a long bike ride, an early morning run, or just sitting outside first thing with a cup of coffee. Trees and water help me recharge and I feel very fortunate to be able to connect with our woods and lakes in the summertime.

Long days filled with sunlight and music, evening walks with my dog at the county park, and the summer growing season all make my heart so happy.

There’s something magical about summer in Wisconsin. After long winters, the warm days feel like a gift, we soak up every bit of sunshine. Our garden bursts with life, and most mornings you’ll find me strolling through it with my coffee. The front porch becomes our favorite gathering spot, drawing in neighbors for good conversation and a drink.

Our kids, who are growing up far too fast, spend their days running from house to house, camping in the backyard, catching fireflies, and tromping through the ponds, often coming home with mud and jars of mysterious water experiments. This summer, we even added a highlight: the Coldplay concert at Camp Randall, an unforgettable night under the stars.

I love this season because it means having my kids close, with fewer commitments, and more time together. These summer days aren’t just beautiful, they’re memories in the making.

I was born in the peak of summer and will attribute that to my love of all things summer – from time spent running and kayaking to laying by the pool with friends and family to traveling… I love it all! The one thing always in common though is lots of outdoor time. This year included lots of outdoor adventures from my country road runs, to seeing live music in the little village of Saxapahaw, to getting in a vacation to Aruba.

I always look forward to summer pool dates with my family. I love being able to clock out of work early on a hot summer day knowing the pool is waiting, along with brats and sweet corn for dinner! Also an abundance of cherry tomatoes!!

Gardening in Wisconsin is a special summer joy, as is the cooking, preserving and eating that comes from all that hard work.
