Public, academic, and school libraries across Wisconsin and the country highlighted the importance of freedom of choice in what we read during Banned Books Week, October 5th-11th. This year’s theme, 43 years after the first Banned Books Week, based on George Orwell’s novel 1984 serves as a prescient warning about the dangers of censorship in the present day. “The 2025 theme of Banned Books Week serves as a reminder that censorship efforts persist to this day,” ALA President Cindy Hohl said. “We must always come together to stand up for the right to read.”
