Libraries with WiLS network may digitize their 35 mm microfilm with Backstage’s Reel Deal program, now at a promotional rate of $75 per reel, down from $89. While microfilm ensures archival preservation, digitized resources offer more options for visibility and distribution. So, the Reel Deal package comes with two options.
The Reel Deal
- 8-bit grayscale master TIFF images, for archiving.
- 8-bit grayscale JPEG compressed derivative images, for access.
- Single-page, searchable PDF files, one file per image.
- One digital image per film frame, reflecting single pages or two-page spreads, as filmed.
- Files are named with the microfilm reel number and a sequential counter.
The Reel Deal Plus
With an additional 12¢ – 15¢ per page, the Reel Deal Plus adds in:
- Multi-page, searchable PDF files, bound by issue or segment.
- Reels filmed as two-page spreads will be auto-split to one page per TIFF.
- Structural metadata reflected in file names will be based on information gathered from the first pages of each new issue or segment, or from eye-legible microfilm targets.
- File directory structure will follow the metadata collected. For example, directories may be organized by issue or date.
- During thumbnail-level manual review, eye-legible targets and will be moved to a separate folder.
